A young Muslim girl from a Mumbai school has won the Bhagwat Gita competition organized by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).
12-year-old Mariyam Asif Siddiqui, who is a sixth-grade student at Cosmopolitan High School in Mira Road, won the contest by beating 4,500 students in the competition. The students came from over 150 schools.
The competition called `Shrimad Bhagwad Gita Champion League’ included the recitation of the holy book and 100 questions.
“It was very interesting to read the Bhagwad Gita as I have got a lot of information about life from it.
She said, “My parents encouraged me to take part in the competition with a view that there is no need to hate any particular religion and it is important to know about the epics from religions to which they do not belong.”
Asif Naseem Siddiqui, Mariyam’s father, said he was proud of his daughter’s achievement. “These kids are the future of our nation. They should not be divided by religions and should be taught to respect all religions.
